Unconditional Love for All Jamaicans – the Controversial “Pro Gay” PSA

17 August 2011 by Karin in Current Affairs [ 6 comments ]

I just don’t get what the big deal about this video is. Personally, I think all Jamaicans could all benefit from hearing its message  - tolerance for all despite our differences.

I dont’ think this video is pro or con being homosexual or any other kind of “sexual”, it just says let’s just try and love each other despite our differences.

The following is taken from the video’s text on YouTube:

Hatred of LGBT persons is rooted in ignorance and fear. By telling the stories of actual Jamaicans we can begin to understand what it really means to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender in Jamaica, LGBT people are not mere outcasts on the fringes of society, they are our family members, friends and coworkers, and they need our supporting in fighting against prejudice and discrimination.

This Public Service Announcement (PSA) tells the heartwarming story of Matthew and Christine Straw. The former Miss Jamaica World and Miss Jamaica Universe, Christine, declares her love for her brother who is gay, while calling upon us to love our LGBT family members and friends unconditionally.

It is our hope that this inspiring public declaration of love will inspire other families and friends to share their stories of acceptance, and that those who are on a journey to acceptance will be moved to show all embracing love to the LGBT people in their lives.

Many thanks to Christine and Matthew for sharing their story. Jamaica is indebted to you for your role in the fight for equality for all Jamaicans.

I don’t understand why this ad is considered “controversial” as it promotes love and acceptance of PERSONS and not a particular lifestyle. The Catholic Opinion (Gleaner Supplement) of August 28, 2011 has an article pointing out that Christians are called by Christ to love ALL persons and to respect their dignity. It is worth reading.
