Worth A Visit

A Visit to the Dolphin Head Mountains, Hanover

P1000268

I visited the Dolphin Head Mountains in Hanover, western Jamaica last week and was once again amazed at the beauty of our small island.

The Dolphin Head Mountains are part of Jamaica’s western range of mountains which extend through Westmoreland and Hanover, reaching a height of 600 metres (1,809 ft) at Birch’s Hill.

The Dolphin Head Mountain is so called because of its likeness to a dolphin’s head which can be seen from far out at sea.

Parts of the forested areas of the Dolphin Head Mountains are a forest reserve managed by the Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Department.

One of Jamaica’s tropical rain forests, Dolphin Head is  ideal for hiking, picnicking, birdwatching, or just plain relaxing.

The area is well known for its large variety of birds and species of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the area.

The best times for birdwatching are early in the morning or approaching sunset.

On our visit, we drove up from Kinsvale, Hanover – about a 20 minute drive to a beautiful valley in the mountains…

More on this to come…

Some kids also visiting the area from a local school…
