One Island, Two Jamaicas and a Whole Heap of Difference
This is an interesting look at dancehall music and how it affects and reflects Jamaican society.
According to the producers, “Jamaican society can be divided along class, language and culture lines. Its rich vs. poor, English vs. Patois and uptown vs. downtown.
Correspondent Lisa Biagiotti, producer Micah Fink and director of photography Gabrielle Weiss examine the public debate that erupted earlier this year when graphic Dancehall music lyrics and images were banned from Jamaica’s airwaves. The public responses reveal the legacy of two Jamaicas dating back to the countrys slave history”.

see both sides – cannot say that the words and images don’t negativaly influence people’s actions and dancehall is not “uplifting” to people who are living w/o much opportunity; high unwed pregnancy rates, excessive drug use, crime – it is reality – Yes, but why laud it if it drags you down? But it is very representative of what people think say and do, especially “downtown” – like hip-hop in the US – so it is connected with their expression of their culture, which other than music and dance and sexuality, has limited areas for expression.
