Jah9 Releases Her Debut Album – New Name

New Name is the debut album from rising female reggae vocalist Janine “Jah9” Cunningham. Jah9 has been credited as the creator of the “Jazz on Dub” genre, and New Name reflects this masterful blend of the jazz melodies of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone with the dancehall attack of Sizzla and the heavy dub rhythm of Augustus Pablo. Produced by famed Stone Love selecter Rory Gilligan, New Name sets a new standard for conscious roots reggae.

The “Deluxe Edition” of New Name, featuring extended mixes of several tracks, is available exclusively on the Apple iTunes Store as of Tuesday February 26, 2013.

After a featured apperance on Protoje’s 7 Year Itch album (along with Kymani Marley and Gentleman), Jah9 went on to have a stellar 2012. She toured Europe, playing dates that included London’s O2 Arena and Rototom Sunplash in Spain and following this with a slot at the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in California.

She also released a slew of singles, including “Jungle”, “New Name” and “Legitmate”, all of which found themselves in heavy rotation on reggae radio worldwide including Siruis XM, BBC Radio 1Xtra and Radio 2, Kiss FM (London), Rinse FM (London) and the Red Bull Music Academy broadcast series. Her single “Warning” was voted Song Of The Year by Germany’s Riddim Magazine.

David Rodigon (BBC Radio 1Xtra + Radio 2) – “Look out for the debut album by Jah9 produced by Rory, its in the making and it is superb.”

Wordplay Magazine (UK) – “Her voice is just so clear and powerful that I defy anyone to hear this and not be intrigued into this singer.”

Earmilk.com – “Jah9 is one of reggae’s true rising talents and it’s no wonder why. Do yourself a favor and go listen to the rest of her sounds.”
